You know your Western sun sign. Maybe you also know you were born in the Year of the Dragon or the Year of the Rabbit. Eastern astrology goes a step further. It treats your birth as a pattern made of an animal, an element and four “pillars” of time, and it has been used for centuries to talk about character, relationships and the rhythm of a life. This guide explains the whole picture in plain English, from the twelve animals to the five elements to the BaZi chart, and shows an easy way to try it yourself.

What Eastern Astrology Is
”Eastern astrology” is a broad label for the star-lore and calendar traditions of Asia. In everyday use it usually means Chinese astrology, which is built on a calendar that cycles through twelve animals and five elements. The idea behind it is old and appealing: time moves in repeating patterns, and the pattern present at your birth shapes the style you bring to life.
Records of the twelve-animal cycle go back more than two thousand years. The tradition spread across East and Southeast Asia, where versions of it are part of New Year celebrations, naming customs, matchmaking talk and family conversations. Today it also has a global audience that enjoys it as a mix of culture, symbolism and self-reflection.
The Main Branches
- Chinese astrology. The twelve animals, the five elements, yin and yang, and BaZi (the four pillars chart). This is what most people mean by Eastern astrology.
- Vedic astrology (Jyotish). From India. It uses a sidereal zodiac, the position of the moon in 27 lunar mansions called nakshatras, and a system of planetary periods.
- Other regional traditions. Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Tibet each have their own versions of the animal cycle and calendar customs.
This guide focuses on the Chinese system, because it is the one behind the Eastern Astrology Language Reading offered by the seller, which we cover in our introduction to the Eastern Astrology Language Reading.
The Twelve Animals
The animals run in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. A popular story says the Jade Emperor invited the animals to a race across a river, and the order is the order they finished. Each animal carries a set of traditional associations. The Rat is resourceful, the Ox steady, the Tiger bold, the Rabbit gentle, the Dragon charismatic, the Snake thoughtful, the Horse free-spirited, the Goat creative, the Monkey clever, the Rooster observant, the Dog loyal and the Pig generous.
One detail trips up many people: the Chinese year begins at Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the previous animal. For example, 2026 is the Year of the Horse, beginning on February 17, 2026.
The Five Elements
Layered on top of the animal is one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each year carries an element, so a Fire Horse and a Water Horse share an animal but differ in flavor. Combined with yin and yang, the elements create a repeating cycle of 60 years.
The elements follow two classic relationships:
- The generating cycle. Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal gathers Water, and Water nourishes Wood.
- The controlling cycle. Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.
People use these cycles as a language of balance. A chart that has plenty of Water and little Fire, for example, is described as calm and reflective, and the tradition suggests ways to talk about the missing element.
BaZi, the Four Pillars
BaZi means “eight characters.” It is the deepest layer of Chinese astrology. Your chart has four pillars, one each for the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar has two characters: a heavenly stem (one of ten, made from the five elements in yin and yang) and an earthly branch (one of twelve, the animals). Four pillars with two characters each make eight characters.
- The year pillar is linked with family background and the outer image you show the world.
- The month pillar is linked with upbringing, career and the seasons.
- The day pillar is the heart of the chart. Its stem is called the Day Master and stands for you.
- The hour pillar is linked with inner life, children and later years.
BaZi readers also look at ten-year “luck pillars,” which describe the changing themes of a life. A full traditional chart uses birth time, but you can enjoy the animal and element from your date of birth alone, which is exactly how the Eastern Astrology Language Reading quiz begins.

60-day money-back guaranteeHow It Feels Different From Western Astrology
| Western astrology | Chinese astrology | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Sun sign by birth date | Animal by birth year |
| Building blocks | Planets, signs, houses | Animals, five elements, yin and yang |
| Chart | Birth chart with a time and place | BaZi: year, month, day and hour pillars |
| Rhythm | Planetary transits | The year cycle and ten-year luck pillars |
Many people enjoy knowing both. The Western chart is often described as a picture of personality, and the Eastern chart as a picture of balance and timing.
How People Use It
- For self-reflection. An animal and element offer fresh words for your habits and strengths.
- For relationships. Compatibility between animals is a favorite topic with partners, friends and families.
- For culture and celebration. Lunar New Year, gifts and red envelopes all connect to the animal of the year.
- For planning conversations. People like to talk about which seasons feel right for a new start.
It is best treated as a cultural and entertainment practice, not as science. Astrology does not have scientific support for predicting life events, and a good reading never replaces advice from a doctor, a financial professional or a counselor.
