You type “eastern astrology birth chart calculator” because you want an answer: which animal am I, which element, and what does my whole chart say? Good news: the first two answers take about a minute with a simple table, and you can do it right here. For the full chart, with all four pillars and a plain-English reading, there is a free 9-question quiz. This page is a how-to guide, a method and a table, not a software tool. Here is the whole path from birth year to full chart.

Step 1: Your Animal in Ten Seconds
The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle, so your animal depends only on your birth year. Here is the quick formula:
- Take your birth year and subtract 4.
- Divide by 12 and keep the remainder.
- Match the remainder: 0 Rat, 1 Ox, 2 Tiger, 3 Rabbit, 4 Dragon, 5 Snake, 6 Horse, 7 Goat, 8 Monkey, 9 Rooster, 10 Dog, 11 Pig.
Example: someone born in 1990. 1990 minus 4 is 1986. 1986 divided by 12 is 165 with a remainder of 6, which is Horse. Someone born in 2000: 1996 divided by 12 is 166 with a remainder of 4, which is Dragon.
Step 2: Your Element and Yin or Yang
Each year also carries one of the five elements, and the rule is even simpler. Look at the last digit of your birth year:
| Last digit | Element |
|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Metal |
| 2 or 3 | Water |
| 4 or 5 | Wood |
| 6 or 7 | Fire |
| 8 or 9 | Earth |
Yin or yang follows the last digit too: even digits are yang, odd digits are yin. So 1990 is a yang Metal Horse and 2000 is a yang Metal Dragon. Put the pieces together and you have the classic “Element + Animal” label, such as Wood Rat or Fire Dragon. The full combination repeats every 60 years, which is why a 1960 Metal Rat and a 2020 Metal Rat share a label.

Takes about 60 secondsStep 3: Check the New Year Line
This is the one trap. The Chinese year does not start on January 1. It starts at the Lunar New Year, which falls between about January 21 and February 20. If your birthday is in January or February, check the date for your birth year. If you were born before that date, your animal is the one from the previous year.
Lunar New Year dates, 1990 to 2026: 1990 Jan 27, 1991 Feb 15, 1992 Feb 4, 1993 Jan 23, 1994 Feb 10, 1995 Jan 31, 1996 Feb 19, 1997 Feb 7, 1998 Jan 28, 1999 Feb 16, 2000 Feb 5, 2001 Jan 24, 2002 Feb 12, 2003 Feb 1, 2004 Jan 22, 2005 Feb 9, 2006 Jan 29, 2007 Feb 18, 2008 Feb 7, 2009 Jan 26, 2010 Feb 14, 2011 Feb 3, 2012 Jan 23, 2013 Feb 10, 2014 Jan 31, 2015 Feb 19, 2016 Feb 8, 2017 Jan 28, 2018 Feb 16, 2019 Feb 5, 2020 Jan 25, 2021 Feb 12, 2022 Feb 1, 2023 Jan 22, 2024 Feb 10, 2025 Jan 29, 2026 Feb 17.
Example: a birthday on January 30, 1996 falls before the February 19, 1996 Lunar New Year, so the animal is the 1995 one, a Pig, not the 1996 Rat. BaZi practitioners use a slightly different line, the Start of Spring (Li Chun, around February 4), so you may see two answers for a late January or early February birthday. Both are legitimate traditions.
Step 4: From Animal to Full Chart
An animal and an element describe your year pillar, one of four. A complete BaZi birth chart also needs:
- the month pillar, which follows the Chinese solar terms rather than the calendar month;
- the day pillar, found from a running count of days in the 60-day cycle, and its stem is your Day Master;
- the hour pillar, from your birth time in two-hour blocks.
These three need reference tables, and one slip in the day count throws everything off. That is the point where most people stop doing the arithmetic and look for a ready-made reading. For a closer look at what those pillars hold, see what an Eastern astrology birth chart contains.

How do I find my Chinese zodiac animal from my birth year?
Subtract 4 from your birth year, divide by 12 and look at the remainder: 0 is Rat, 1 Ox, 2 Tiger, 3 Rabbit, 4 Dragon, 5 Snake, 6 Horse, 7 Goat, 8 Monkey, 9 Rooster, 10 Dog and 11 Pig. For 1990, (1990 - 4) = 1986, and 1986 divided by 12 leaves a remainder of 6, so Horse.
How do I find my element from my birth year?
Look at the last digit of your birth year. Years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 are Water, 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 are Fire, and 8 or 9 are Earth. A 1990 birth is Metal, so the year is a Metal Horse.
What if I was born in January or February?
The Chinese year starts at the Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and mid February. If you were born before it, your animal is the one from the previous year. The table on this page lists the dates for 1990 to 2026. BaZi readers use the Start of Spring, around February 4, instead.
Is the seller’s quiz a free birth chart calculator?
It is a free 9-question quiz, not a standalone calculator. It asks for your first name, email and date of birth, then shows your reading and the reading options. The email box is pre-ticked, so untick it if you do not want emails.
Can I work out my full BaZi chart by hand?
You can find your animal, element and yin or yang from your birth year. The month, day and hour pillars need solar-term tables and a day-count reference, which is why most people use a ready-made reading for the full chart.
What is yin or yang about my year?
Even-numbered years such as 1990 and 2024 are yang. Odd-numbered years such as 1991 and 2025 are yin. The full cycle repeats every 60 years.
Is there a money-back guarantee?
Yes. The Eastern Astrology Language Reading is covered by a 60-day money-back guarantee through ClickBank.
The Bottom Line
