A zodiac animal is a great starting point, but it is only one line of a much bigger picture. An Eastern astrology chart, known as a BaZi or four pillars chart, lays out your birth as eight characters in four columns. Reading one feels a little like seeing a map of your own style: which elements are strong, which are quiet, and what the next decade is said to bring. This guide shows how the chart is built, piece by piece, so you can follow it when you see your own.

The Layout: Four Pillars, Eight Characters
A BaZi chart has four columns, one for each time of your birth: year, month, day and hour. Each column has two characters, a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. That makes eight characters, which is exactly what “BaZi” means.
| Hour pillar | Day pillar | Month pillar | Year pillar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem (top) | Stem | Day Master | Stem | Stem |
| Branch (bottom) | Animal | Animal | Animal | Animal |
| Traditional theme | Inner life, later years | You and close partnership | Career, upbringing | Family background, public image |
Traditional charts are written right to left, with the year on the right. The table above shows the same order used in many modern printouts, with the hour at the left.
The Ten Heavenly Stems
The stems come from the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form:
| Element | Yang stem | Yin stem |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Jia | Yi |
| Fire | Bing | Ding |
| Earth | Wu | Ji |
| Metal | Geng | Xin |
| Water | Ren | Gui |
Yang is the bolder, outward form, and yin the softer, inward form. Traditional images help: Jia is a tall tree, Yi a vine, Bing the sun, Ding a candle flame, Wu a mountain, Ji garden soil, Geng a sword, Xin a jewel, Ren the ocean and Gui rain.
The Twelve Earthly Branches
The branches are the twelve zodiac animals, each paired with a two-hour block of the day and a month of the year:
| Branch | Animal | Hours | Month (approximate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zi | Rat | 11 pm to 1 am | December |
| Chou | Ox | 1 to 3 am | January |
| Yin | Tiger | 3 to 5 am | February |
| Mao | Rabbit | 5 to 7 am | March |
| Chen | Dragon | 7 to 9 am | April |
| Si | Snake | 9 to 11 am | May |
| Wu | Horse | 11 am to 1 pm | June |
| Wei | Goat | 1 to 3 pm | July |
| Shen | Monkey | 3 to 5 pm | August |
| You | Rooster | 5 to 7 pm | September |
| Xu | Dog | 7 to 9 pm | October |
| Hai | Pig | 9 to 11 pm | November |
How Each Pillar Is Found
- Year pillar. Found from your birth year. The stem follows the last digit and the branch is the animal. For example, 2026 is Bing-Wu, a Fire Horse year. In BaZi the year traditionally changes in early February at the start of spring, not on January 1.
- Month pillar. Found from your birth month, but BaZi months follow the solar calendar’s 24 seasonal markers, so each month starts around the 4th to 8th of the Western calendar month. The branch comes from the table above, and the stem follows from the year’s stem by a fixed traditional rule.
- Day pillar. Found from a continuous 60-day cycle. It is looked up in a calendar table or calculated, and it gives you your Day Master.
- Hour pillar. Found from your time of birth using the two-hour blocks, with the stem coming from the day’s stem.
Because the month and day pillars depend on seasonal markers and a long calendar cycle, many people use a calendar table or a ready-made chart rather than doing it by hand.
The Day Master
The heavenly stem of the day pillar is your Day Master. In BaZi it stands for you, and every other character is read in relation to it. A Yang Wood Day Master is pictured as a tall tree: straightforward, growth-minded and principled. A Yin Water Day Master is pictured as rain or mist: adaptable, perceptive and gentle. These images are poetic by design, and they give people an easy way to talk about their own style.
Reading the Element Balance
Once the eight characters are laid out, readers count the elements. Branches also hold hidden stems, so the count is richer than just eight symbols. The key questions in the tradition are:
- Which elements are strong, and which are missing or quiet?
- Does the Day Master have plenty of support, or is it surrounded by elements that draw on it?
- Which elements are described as helpful to bring in, through habits, colors, seasons and surroundings?
Think of it as a conversation about balance rather than a verdict. A chart heavy in Fire may be described as energetic and expressive, and one heavy in Water as reflective and flexible. Readers then use the generating and controlling cycles you may have seen in our Eastern astrology overview to talk about what might bring things into balance.

After the four pillars, BaZi readers add luck pillars. These are ten-year periods, each with its own stem and branch, which unfold in order after your month pillar. In the tradition each luck pillar brings a different mix of elements into your life, so a reader may talk about a “Fire decade” or a “Water decade.” People enjoy them as a way to reflect on the seasons of their own life.
